GIS in Public Health

Geographic Information Systems Analysis

Jersey City, New Jersey · 2004

This page represents a presentation of what is possible with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) software. In 2007, we were pleased to provide GIS content for Glencoe/McGraw-Hill publishing for three textbooks: World Geography and Cultures, Glencoe World History, and The American Vision, with a combined expected worldwide distribution of 750,000 copies.

Final Project: Essex County Sensory Disabled Analysis

I live in Jersey City, New Jersey in The Heights neighborhood near Christ Hospital. I have always wondered who and what surrounds me from a cultural, healthcare, and economic point-of-view. Below are six views I created using GIS software. These images are large files to preserve detail; they may take time to load on slower connections. Use your browser's back button to return to this page after viewing each image.

The entire project exceeds 20MB because of all the supporting files required to view it in full. If you are interested in examining the complete project, please contact me and we can arrange file transfer. I started this project in 2004 to explore how many golf courses were near Christ Hospital, hoping to make a correlation between golfing access and healthcare availability. I was surprised to discover that in Jersey City at that time, and actually all of Hudson County, there were no golf courses, and my hypothesis fell away. If you zoom out from the initial project view, you will slowly begin to see golf courses strategically sprouting beyond the urban base.
